How Big Should My Awning Be?

Choosing the right size matters more than almost any other decision when you buy an awning. Get it right and you’ll enjoy generous shade, better protection from the weather and a finish that looks as though it was always part of the house.

As a guide, we recommend your awning extends a minimum of 0.5 m beyond each side of the door or opening it serves. That’s at least 1 m of extra width overall.

Why Add Extra Width?

1. Better sun protection. As the sun moves across the sky, the extra width keeps you in the shade for longer.
2. Better weather defence. A wider awning helps shield you from rain and sideways gusts.
3. Visual balance. A slightly wider awning sits more comfortably against the house and looks more considered.

How to Measure for Your Awning

1. Measure the width of your door or opening.
2. Add at least 1 m in total, which is our recommended minimum. A 2 m door suits an awning of 3 m or more.
3. Think about projection, meaning how far the awning reaches out from the wall. For dining or seating beneath it, a projection of 3 m works well. Larger projections give even more coverage and flexibility.

Mounting Height

The mounting height is how high the awning is fixed on the wall. It depends on the projection you choose, so the awning clears your head and still drains properly. We recommend a 15-degree pitch so rainwater runs off the fabric rather than pooling.

For a front-rail height of 2.1 m when fully extended, the recommended mounting heights are:

• 2 m projection: 2.4 m mounting height
• 2.5 m projection: 2.5 m
• 3 m projection: 2.6 m
• 3.5 m projection: 2.7 m
• 4 m projection: 2.8 m
