How Big Should My Awning Be?

Choosing the right size for your awning is crucial to maximize its functionality and ensure adequate protection from the elements. A general recommendation is to select an awning that awning is going to shade by a minimum of 0.5m each side (1m in total) to offer sufficient shade. This additional coverage provides sufficient shade and protects the area from sunlight, rain, and other weather conditions.

Why Add Extra Width?

  1. Enhanced Sun Protection: The extended size ensures that the awning blocks sunlight even as the sun’s angle shifts throughout the day.
  2. Improved Weather Protection: Additional width helps shield the area from wind-driven rain or snow.
  3. Aesthetic Balance: A slightly larger awning enhances the visual appeal, creating a balanced and proportionate look.

How to Measure for Your Awning:

  1. Measure the Door Width: Start by measuring the width of your door or opening.
  2. Add 1 Meter in total: For a door that’s 2 meters wide, your awning should ideally be 3-4 meters wide.
  3. Account for Projection: Consider how far the awning should extend outward. A minimum projection of 3 meters is recommended to provide ample coverage for a patio area, especially if you intend to sit or dine under the awning. Larger projections offer even more shade and coverage.

Mounting Height of the Awning

The mounting height of the awning refers to the height at which it is fixed on the wall. This height is determined by the projection chosen to ensure proper clearance and functionality.

  • Recommended Pitch: It is advisable to install the awning with a 15-degree pitch to allow water to run off effectively, preventing pooling on the fabric.

For a front rail height of 2.1 meters when the awning is fully extended, the recommended mounting heights are as follows:

  • 2m Projection: 2.4m mounting height
  • 2.5m Projection: 2.5m mounting height
  • 3m Projection: 2.6m mounting height
  • 3.5m Projection: 2.7m mounting height
  • 4m Projection: 2.8m mounting height
